Product photographers typically have the pleasure of working with still life subject matter. This enables us to take our time getting each shot just right. Still life photography is different than lifestyle photography in the sense that the frame is composed close up on the product and is meant to show details. The pressure is on for the photographer to show the subject in its best light. A lifestyle image generally is composed to emphasize a feeling, activity, or concept associated with the product. This tends to be accomplished with less precision and more spontaneity.
Each product has unique properties that require individualized attention. The example here has a few contradicting qualities that needed to be addressed separately and layered to create a final image. The bottle is reflective and transparent while the label has reflective elements and is opaque (it’s important to reveal detail in the foil lettering, and equally important to represent the label’s colors correctly). The background has texture to reveal and so does the cap. A particular lighting style may be optimal for one element, but not so great for another. Below is a compilation of the images used to create the final product seen above.
