Product photography often presents an interesting challenge where minimalist techniques are required to highlight the details of a subject with minimal distraction, while maintaining a storytelling component. Products on white are effective selling tools (just ask amazon), but editorial imagery demands a little more fun to be had in the process.

This product is appropriately referred to as Licorice, and showing the nail polish (rather than just the container) helps to reveal similarities between the subject and its namesake. Reflections in the black surfaces were used to highlight textures and forms, which would otherwise be void of detail. The photographer has total control of what’s seen and what remains hidden. The photo shows the packaging, the product and the branding, while implying a little truth in advertising.
