I noticed a lot of product photographers using splashes in their images and decided to try it out for myself. A few tips for capturing the splash include:
- backlight the scene in order to maximize detail in the liquid.
- use strobes to freeze the motion (the lower you power down the strobes, the more you’ll freeze the liquid in the photograph.)
- choose the fastest shutter speed possible (different shutter types or strobe types will determine how fast you can shoot.)
- give yourself space to work and create a splash friendly environment… there will be a mess to clean up.
For this shot I started with a dry run, in which the subject was suspended and lighting was setup. I wanted a clean image of the product to use in the final shot. Once the splash photography began things got interesting to say the least. It took several attempts to achieve the desired look and some on the spot experimenting proved hilarious. A mess was made, but a welcomed addition to the product photography portfolio was born and consumption of the product helped take the edge off during cleanup.
