Miami Photographer Tom Clark’s Thoughts on Food Photography
Tom Clark is a photographer based in Miami offering commercial and editorial food, product, portrait, architectural and interior photography services.
If you’re a food photographer you’ve probably heard the demand “shoot more like a blogger” from at least one client in the past few years. It’s not bad advice, since what they mean to say is, “make it seem authentic.” Dramatic window lighting, check! Vintage props full of texture and patina, check! Deconstructed, semi-prepped ingredients, check! Partially folded napkin casually tossed in the corner of the frame, check! With the convenience and quality of mobile cameras, everyone’s desire to be a content producer, foodie mania, and a wide spread interest in the culinary arts, food photography is in a sort of golden age. Everyone’s doing it, and a lot of it is actually good.
This image is sort of a step back… an ode to simplicity. They say you can tell a lot about a chef by what they can do with an egg. I figure the same is true with photographers. I could have thrown in some seasoning, some buttered toast, utensils, and a napkin… maybe even a cup of black coffee. Follow the rule of thirds, styled everything to look “natural,” and set it all on an antique wooden table. That would’ve looked fantastic, but this shot is all about the yolk. It’s an exercise in control where deadpan meets knolling meets minimalism.
